May is promising to be a busy month for the AFAH office. Registration for the 20th-anniversary Wheels of Love ride is opening May 15. In 2000, on our first ride, nine riders raised $60,000. Last year, over 550 riders raised close to $4 million, riding the best on- and off-road routes in Israel.
We are excited to have Tal Naveh, Director of Special Programs/Israel in the States for this important month. Tal, Deborah and I will be promoting this milestone Wheels of Love ride in major cities across the country: Denver, Tenafly, Toronto, Seattle, Los Angeles, Bethesda and Scarsdale. If any of those are near you, come join us! (Events). We are looking forward to touching base with past riders, getting the ALYN name out to a new audience and making our 20th-anniversary ride the best one yet!
This month, we also mark several important holidays, both in Israel and the United States: Yom HaShoah, Yom Hazikaron, Yom Ha’atzmaut and Memorial Day. These are days of commemoration, of sadness and humility. We then shift gears and celebrate the birth of Israel on Yom Ha’atzmaut. There is much to be said for the balance of light and dark; sadness and joy; grief and celebration. The importance of showing gratitude becomes evident; not only on these days, but always.
In that spirit, we are grateful to you, the ALYN donors, who support the important work that happens at ALYN Hospital. Thank you from the ALYN children and their families who come for treatment as well as the tools to be independent. Thank you from the doctors, nurses and staff who use your donations to provide best-in-class rehabilitation services to the children in their care.
